I absolutely dreaded it. I could not figure out how x and y worked together, nor did I 'get' what sin and cosine was all about. For sure, Math was my Achilles' heel, and whenever Exams Week came around, I spent extra time reviewing my Math notes, to the point wherein I was neglecting my other subjects.

I was able to graduate from high school though, and luckily, got accepted in my favored university. I guess my grades in other subjects were high enough to make up for my less than exceptional Math scores. For a while, I was able to enjoy my new campus, and all the things that being a freshman in one of the top universities afforded me.

Alas, in my 2nd semester, I got confronted with my old nemesis again. You're right, a pre-requisite Math 101 subject. "No biggie," I remember my prof saying, "this will be like we're reviewing your Math lessons from 3rd and 4th year..."

Ooops. That was exactly what was bothering me. It was then that I realized that I had to understand my Math. I was tired of being stressed out every time someone mentions Math or Trigo or Stats within hearing range. Besides, how was I to understand the more complex lessons when I was having trouble with the basics already?

With a little research, I found out about AHEAD. The person I was able to talk to during my selection process was very helpful and sympathetic. She did not laugh when I told her that I wanted to join a tutorial session for High School Math.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself at AHEAD. I was a bit embarrassed at first when I met my tutor (who was only a few years older than I was!) but again, I got over it real fast. She was very helpful and totally understood why I was doing the review.

For the first time in my life, I was able to understand my Math. Abstract concepts were patiently explained to me in simple terms, and little by little, I was able to get it. It was hard work in the beginning, but as my confidence in my Math skills started to increase, learning became easier. My tutor told me that the reason why I thought Math was difficult was because my foundation in Math was shaky.

Because of AHEAD's intervention, I am proud to say that I passed Math 101 with flying colors. Looking back, I think of all those report cards with the low Math grades that I had to ask my mom to sign and wonder if I should have taken tutorial sessions even then. Oh well, what ifs were never really my cup of tea. What i do know is that I am glad to have reviewed when I did, gladder that I chose AHEAD. AHEAD was my second chance to learn AND understand my High School Math.

-Graziel Estella (24 yrs.)
Marketing AssistantUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1061364496051272422.post-5376646075955927292009-10-28T09:28:00.001+08:002009-10-28T12:27:50.852+08:00Tips and TricksHappy Halloween Everybody!!!

Another long weekend is coming up and we are sure that unlike the recent, unexpected break from school that you got, the Halloween break is one that you are looking forward to. Trick or Treating, costume parties and visits to relatives in the provinces are surely things to do in the upcoming days. But wait! Before you pack your bag with stuff that you think is important, but will later on just be a source of back and shoulder cramps, why not check out this list that we came up for you.

Things To Pack:

Toiletries - soap, shampoo, alcohol, sunblock lotion, mosquito repellant (All in travel sized containers. You'll be glad you left your big bottles of shampoo and conditioner at home. Promise.)

Underwear - no need to elaborate on this one.

Towel - that can also double as a pillow or blanket. Extra points if said towel is also quick drying.

One nice Black shirt - or if you prefer white, make it white. Why? These shades will go with anything. You can wear this shirt multiple times during your holidays and no one will say anything about it.

One pair of Pants - preferrably of a light material

One pair of Capri Pants

One pair of shorts

A nice skirt - (this will come real handy for on the spot dress up dinners, pair it with your black or white shirt)

2-3 shirts

A nice pair of flip-flops that can double as your slippers and go with your skirt.

(Wear your rubber shoes during your travel, that way, you can minimize the bulkiness of your bag)

Planning in advance what to wear and matching it with the activities you are planning to do will lessen the chance of you bringing unnecessary clothes and shoes. Not only that, but it will also free up precious space in your bag for other things that you HAVE to bring such as...

your assignments - We're quite sure your teachers would take advantage of the long weekend to give you assignments and projects, going on a vacation is not an excuse to neglect them. Also, doing them the night before you go back to school might not be a good thing because you will be tired from all the travelling and activities that you would've done by then.

a few reviewers - if there are any topics in school that you are having trouble with, now is the time to try to master them. Maybe being away from a classroom setup is just what you need to be able to focus.

A long weekend is definitely the time to catch up on leisure activities that take a backseat when you are in school. It can also be the time, however, to further your knowledge by doing advance reading or putting the things you learn in school into practical use. Use your time wisely this coming holiday and you'll find out that learning and having fun can be accomplished all at the same time.

Enjoy!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1061364496051272422.post-1991154342852009392009-08-21T13:46:00.004+08:002011-03-28T15:05:36.892+08:00Virtual Tutors become possible with Ahead Interactive
Remember the times when tutors would visit the homes or worse when tutees need to go to their tutor's residences for an excruciating hour just to help students finish assignments for the day?

As parent, worrying about the tutor's snacks and how she'd get home is a concern. It’s nice to see old friends and meet new ones. But before you begin the usual hugs and handshakes, take note of the tips on how to be physically virus free!

Some precautions so that we’ll stop the spread of the A(H1N1) virus:

1. Clean your hands with soap and water. You can also use 70% alcohol or alcohol-based rubs as an alternative.

2. Try to avoid severe contact with other people, if possible. Stay at least 1 meter away from everyone with influenza-like symptoms.

3. If in public area, use a mask to help prevent the spread of droplets.

4. Eat healthy food/snacks. These will make your body stronger and resistant from any virus.

5. Take vitamins, minerals and other immune boosters. These greatly helps protect your body from getting virus and sorts. Choose your nutritional supplements wisely – always go for quality, potency and not the cheap price.

6. Contact a health professional or visit your doctor for other information.

There you go, hope you’ll enjoy the start of your classes! Remember that it’s cool to be healthy and wise!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1061364496051272422.post-15147879469436359822009-05-26T15:56:00.003+08:002011-03-28T16:37:13.558+08:00A Summer Spent Wellby Marvin Diegor (Student Contributor)

It was another perfect morning. The sun was up and it was the 6th of May. Ah. What a beautiful way to welcome the day, if not for the annoying little alarm that kept on ringing since 9:00 AM! Argh! What in the world could an alarm be doing beside my bed, at an early time, at a summer morning, at the last month of my vacation, with the words: “Time for school!”?
And it all came down crashing in my aching head. It is my first day of studying what teachers took 4 years to teach me… in 19 days: High School.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

***
THAT, up there, was my initial reaction to my summer class in Ahead. Now, a week later, I completely have no regrets whatsoever in waking up that day and taking the effort to take myself to what maybe my only hope to achieving the key to my future (nosebleed cue, right here).

Nope, I wasn’t taking summer class because I failed a few subjects. I’m taking them because I want to improve my grades, and most importantly, make sure that I can pass the college entrance tests which will be my turning point in life. Ultimate nerd? Yeah, I know. Well, we’ll just see about that 5 years from now, after graduation.

You see, I had realized that even if you are the son of the richest man or the daughter of the CEO of a leading company, you are not excused, in any way possible (and impossible), from failing in life because somehow you thought that education is not an important part of your existence that you actually planned to “skip it.” No, keine, iiya, nyet, ninguna, HINDI.

That, I realized quite some time ago, but I only saw it in action just a few days ago, in the 5th day of my class.

I hope you’re not yet bored because I still plan on telling you this story:

It was my language proficiency class. We were just about to start the discussion when our lecturer wrote something on the board: “Obama – Language.” And then, he asked us why US President Barrack Obama is crucial to our discussion. He asked everyone, but once you answer, you can’t answer anymore (his policy of giving everyone a fair chance). Anyways, I actually answered an earlier question so I can’t answer that one. I was irritated for that.

What disappoints me more is that no one was standing up to the challenge of answering it. It was a fairly easy question for anyone who has been watching the news. Finally, this girl stood up and said, “It’s because of his speeches.” And that’s how our lecturer started to tell how an African man became a master of the English language.

Well, what can we say about that? I know the news is one of the last things a teenager would watch. I’d be in another world if a kid would line up CNN with MTV and HBO. But just simply knowing what’s happening around you is a completely different thing. Knowing is not being “out” (or being baduy for most Pinoy kids). In fact, it puts you in the league of the “in.”

Knowing is learning. Learning is education. Education is crucial. And, as any other crucial thing, it’s hard to do. But it pays off in different ways; one of them would be an easy time to find jobs after graduation. A high salary might sound good too.

A few may know that some companies don’t accept graduates who didn’t come from the Top 3 universities of the country, namely the University of the Philippines, the Ateneo de Manila University and the De La Salle University (trivia: they’re also among the Top 500 universities in the world). Call it elitism, call it underestimation, and call it inequality or any other term that means “unfair,” but quality service starts with quality people who came from quality institutions.

And now, I sit in a classroom in the leading review center there is in the country, studying what the difference is between “its” and “it’s.” It might be a long way from mastering the language, but it’s a pair of words that will do as any in beginning the road to success. Going back to the basics is the simplest way to get ready for what’s ahead: the rest of your life.

It is 6:33 PM. Another one of my class has ended. It’s tiring, I freeze in the aircon’s wrath (it’s right in front of me. *wink*), and it gives me pimples. But at the end of the day, I know it’s worth it, and as the sun sets down, I know this would be a summer spent well.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1061364496051272422.post-89516644564516091872009-05-23T13:57:00.003+08:002009-05-23T14:01:34.139+08:00Aghamby Marvin Diegor (Student Contributor)

Another day, another class; and the subject for today: Science. It is defined as the study-of-the-physical-and-natural-world-and-phenomena- especially-by-using-systematic-observation-and-experiment! Well, that’s a mouthful isn’t it?

To be honest, I’m not very good at it. But for today, we were tasked to answer General Science, Biology, Chemistry and (heartbeat sound effects) Physics. I was lucky enough to correctly answer at least 7 questions out of 20 per topic! Phew, it was so hard.

Right then and there, I thought: would this be my situation when I’m sitting in the once-a-year UPCAT? Or maybe, the Ateneo College Entrance Exam or that of De La Salle University? Would my minimal knowledge in Science be a hindrance to achieving my dreams? I shuddered at the thought. Well, that won’t happen… I hope. AND I trust my lecturers at Ahead to teach the right things to me.

Just recently, I actually had fun learning about Science thingamajigs. We were grouped into fives and I was lucky enough to have knowledgeable group mates. But even with their knowledge, we still didn’t win. It was a close fight though. The winning team was only 2 points ahead of us. Anyways, I realized that I didn’t have to know everything, only the important things that I need to get through life. Most professionals didn’t need to know everything, but at least they’re not dumb-struck when they are asked, “What is the most abundant gas on Earth?” Well? FYI, it’s Nitrogen which comprises 70% of the Earth’s atmosphere (nope, it’s not Oxygen, which was my mistake too).

My confidence has developed a bit and that’s good enough for me! I still got a year left (which is my fourth year). Well, two months actually since UPCAT is on August 1 or 2, 2009 (heartbeat sound effects getting louder). Well, when the time comes, I’ll be sitting there with all the things I learned. And when I pass, the rest, as they say, will be history; and I shall never forget how a little group of five had fun on how they learned what kind of animals develop a placenta.

Good luck to all aspiring Iskolars ng Bayan, Green Archers, and Blue Eagles!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1061364496051272422.post-17656730399344334662009-05-20T11:37:00.004+08:002009-05-20T11:48:58.161+08:00Thinking AHEADRemember how we used to imagine what we would like to be? Choosing a course is one of the most important decisions in our lives. After college graduation (once we have our dream job), your careers will act like a mirror and give you a piece of who you really are and what you are good at. This is also the reason why everybody tends to look at universities and other learning institutions as foundations before entering the "real world."If you still have no idea what path to take, or if you have no idea what course to take before entering college, think AHEAD. These guidelines would help you figure out what you'd like to pursue:

Ask yourself the following questions:

Who am I right now?
Take time to recall your attitudes, achievements, and aspirations.

What do I enjoy doing?
In what areas do I excel? It is all about YOU.

Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan. – This is something I’ve always believed in. In fact, I believe in it so much that I dedicated my life to helping make it come true.

You see, for almost 14 years, our company has been committed to young people, to you. We are committed to helping you achieve better performance in school, preparing you for admission to the best universities, motivating you to enjoy learning, and inspiring you to be the best that you can be.

We are committed to fulfilling the youth’s role in the future of our country, through quality education. We believe that with quality education, a person gains the capacity to achieve great things – great things that will help himself, his loved ones, the country, and maybe even the world.

Our original mission-vision states that every individual, given the proper guidance and the means to employ his talents and energies wisely, can realize his full potential as a student, a person, and a productive member of the community. This goes for each and every one of you.

You can reach your full potential if you pay attention to your studies and try to absorb what you can. Learning is not limited to the four walls of your classroom. Even while you’re outside of school or at home, you are still learning. This event is a perfect example of learning outside the classroom. I was a student leader like you myself. When I was a student in UP, I was a member of 10 organizations, in all of them I held important leadership roles. But before that I also attended various leadership training programs such as this. Seven years after I graduated, I again found myself to be a member and officer of again 10 organizations. And even now I attend several learning seminar and workshops sometimes as many as 3 a month. I even enrolled for masters in here in Ateneo and in AIM. You see I really believe in learning in and outside the classroom because I want to be able to learn how to help others reach their full potential.

You don’t have time to join 10 orgs or attend seminars while in high school. But as of now, you can apply what you learn in every situation you find yourself in, so that it will become embedded in your mind. For example, if you learn about proper money management, practice it to budget your allowance. Soon, it will become second nature to you and a normal part of your lifestyle.

You can reach your full potential when you practice the right values and attitude. Your principles and attitude build your character. Always work on your character because this is a big part of your success or failure. My favorite values are leadership, excellence, and responsibility. These are the values that we try to develop in our company and in all our students. And these values are part of what this event is teaching you as well.

Responsibility – As the future of the nation, you are taught to have the courage to rise to the challenge of taking the Philippines toward progress.

Excellence – Given the responsibility of helping the country, you must learn to always strive for the best, in order to take the Philippines to progress.

Leadership – If you are consistently pursuing excellence, you will emerge a leader. Leadership is not simply being the best of the best. It is about consistently being the best that you can be. And most of all, leadership is about helping others become leaders on their own or at least becoming the best that they can be. .

Your parents work hard to give you the best. You parents give you all the things that you need and more. They send you to the best schools so you can have the best teachers, the best lessons and the best campus experiences. This is why the best is also expected of you.

When you finish high school, aim for the best universities. Ateneo, La Salle, and UP are not just the best in the Philippines — they are among the best in the world. With a diploma from any of these schools, many opportunities will be opened up to you not only here but all over the world. But only 10% of the 100,000 who apply to Ateneo, La Salle, and UP get accepted. This is why you have to work hard for a slot. In many of the best schools in Metro Manila, only about 3% of the graduating class get in.

A bright future awaits you — if you are willing to stay ahead. Do more. Be more.

One way is going to a review center even if you are already at the top of your class. This is the mark of a true leader – taking responsibility for your skills and talents, and aiming for excellence by taking advantage of the resources available to you so that you can reach your full potential.

Many honour students and school leaders have even used the advantage of going to a tutorial center to help them in their daily lessons. Before getting help from a tutor, they had to study until midnight. But with a tutorial, they have more time to do the things they enjoy. After coming from only an hour long tutorial, they don’t even have to study at home anymore. They can just enjoy being with their family, or they can watch TV, sleep early – basically use the free time to do whatever they want. Before, without the help of the tutorial, they didn’t have time for anything else. Tutorial and review centers are most useful to student leaders because then they are free to do their project if they already understand their lessons.

You know, there's really no limit to learning. The best students still benefit from extra guidance. Many students running for honours or aiming to be Valedictorian seek and obtain extra help. Everybody needs a mentor, even teachers, trainers, advisers, and counsellors. Even athletes, dancers and swimmers need a coach, including those great players in the Olympics. Pacquiao even has Freddie Roach. Even the best basketball players need a coach.

Information is at your fingertips. When you need to learn about something, you can just "google" it. During our time, we had to go through the whole card catalogue before we could find the book that may or, as is the case most of the time, may NOT have the answers to our questions. Take advantage of every resources you have, every help you can find and every chance to learn. Be happy to be ahead.

I really believe that education is our country's only hope. When I was just a little older than you, I dreamt of improving the country's education by putting up a teacher training foundation which would give teachers free education. Since 2006, we have been training hundreds of teachers. We were chosen by DepEd to train the best teachers of Metro Manila’s public schools. And we have been conducting private seminars for teachers from all over the country.

I revised that dream a little bit by focusing on principals—who are really the prime movers of education. I am living that dream now. Through the Educ18 Foundation for School Leadership Excellence, we hope to inspire more people to be educators, to help more principals run their school excellently, and to make others more aware of the school principal's contribution to society. On December 5 & 6, we will again be holding a seminar for principals right here in Ateneo.

This was just a dream before, but it is now becoming a reality. You too can dream and make it real—if you set your heart and mind to it. You have all the reasons to succeed and no excuse to fail.

Much is expected of you. Some day you will be the leaders of this country. You will be making waves in business, in public service, in medicine and science, in law, and hopefully in education as well. Your peers will be following you, looking up to you.

When our company has training programs, I always tell my staff that they should also be at their best because we are serving the future. We are serving you.

During the training for our new lecturers, I always tell them that they are heroes. Because teachers will always be heroes.

We only get the top 1% of the graduating class from Ateneo Lasalle and UP as lecturers… Being at the top of their class, they have the responsibility of sharing their “galing.” Can you imagine if teachers are not “magaling?” But if teachers are good, they can develop good students, who can become good leaders, good doctors, lawyers, engineers, or teachers, and good voters – good voters who can vote for a good president and good lawmakers, who can make the country ahead of the rest.

You know, I’ve always believed that the Philippines is a paradise. Without politics and some greedy and irresponsible people, we have all that it takes to say we are. It’s up to the future to make it better every day.

So give the future a better chance. You are here and you have the responsibility to make it happen.

With that, I wish each of you a bright and promising future ahead.

I am really very happy being able to talk to you today. Thank you!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1061364496051272422.post-31485183227208738262008-12-04T15:01:00.001+08:002008-12-04T15:05:10.841+08:00Youth = HOPE
If you are given a chance to speak to a crowd of young people coming from different parts of our country, what would you say?

With the future becoming more competitive, being ahead of the rest always count. Young people from various cities and provinces of the Philippines gathered together to relive the commitment---Youth is HOPE.

Like what Ms. Rossana Llenado, president of Ahead Tutorial and Review Center, said in her speech during the Serye Kabataan:

“Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan. – This is something I’ve always believed in.
